A day after two independent journalists reported that Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell was in a state of “brain death,” top GOP strategist Scott Jennings claimed he spoke with the senator on the phone this morning.
Jennings stated they discussed politics for nearly 20 minutes, covering topics including Iran, Ukraine, developments in Maine, and his recent visit to the Truman Presidential Library.
McConnell was hospitalized on June 14 following a cardiac arrest. According to audio from a 911 call, he suffered “cardiac arrest,” meaning his heart stopped beating. He has been under medical care since then.
McConnell’s staff claims he continues to work with staff members on pressing issues, but the senator is frequently assisted by aides when speaking in the Senate due to confusion and physical limitations.
Former Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene described McConnell as a “vegetable” who should resign. She accused the Republican Party of failing to act while a senator who is reportedly mentally impaired remains in office.
Greene also noted that McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, traveled to China shortly after what she described as McConnell’s medical crisis and met with Chinese officials, which she labeled an alarming example of politicians clinging to power even when incapacitated.
Multiple reports indicate McConnell is in critical condition. According to a high-level source close to the White House, McConnell is “in organ failure” and not expected to recover.
GOP Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated he spoke with McConnell earlier this week, describing the senator as “dialed in.” McConnell’s staff maintained that he remains engaged in legislative matters despite his health challenges.
