A devout Catholic couple in Massachusetts has had their teenage daughter removed from their home by state officials after school authorities allegedly “socially transitioned” her without parental knowledge or consent.
Joseph and Arlene Kutzko report that their daughter Sophie was taken by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) following allegations that Algonquin Regional High School in Southborough engaged in a process to change her gender identity without their involvement. The parents claim they objected because their religious beliefs do not permit them to acknowledge their daughter as a boy.
DCF has assumed guardianship of Sophie, and a permanent restraining order prevents the parents and her older brother from contacting her. A judge recently blocked the state from administering high-dose testosterone to the girl, with a hearing scheduled for October 29th.
Vernadette Broyles, attorney for the Kutzkos, stated that school policies failing to inform parents when a child rejects their sex and claims another identity create a system leading to such outcomes. She noted that in this case, the school reported the family to DCF without parental notification.
The incident has drawn attention to reports of minors undergoing gender-affirming treatments with regretful outcomes. Examples include Nathaniel (last name withheld), who underwent “bottom surgery,” Chloe Cole, who had “top surgery,” and Clementine Breen, who received puberty blockers at age 12 and a double mastectomy by age 14.
