Far-left Democratic Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota has withdrawn from the race for a third term as governor, citing far-reaching Somali fraud scandals and political attacks.
In his resignation letter — exceeding one thousand words — Walz stated that organized groups of criminals had exploited state generosity, and that political actors were now exploiting the crisis to undermine public trust. He criticized Republicans and President Trump for seeking to make Minnesota “colder and meaner,” while targeting neighbors and diverting funds meant for childcare programs.
Walz highlighted journalist Nick Shirley’s investigation into fraudulent day care centers as a key factor in his decision, noting that it forced him to prioritize defending Minnesotans over his campaign.
Klobuchar has indicated she is considering a run for governor after meeting with Walz on January 4. If elected in November 2026, she would serve until 2030 and may appoint Walz to her Senate seat.
Walz’s political challenges include a drunk-driving arrest, his nickname “Tampon Tim” following legislation on tampon dispensers for boys’ restrooms, criticism over his military service, and recent complaints that President Trump called him “seriously retarded.”
The race also features Attorney General Keith Ellison, who faces credible accusations of domestic violence and has been linked to similar fraud allegations.
