Grace Ryan, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member dubbed the “DSA Duchess,” has drawn criticism for her promotion of “noblesse oblige” as a justification for using her wealth to help others. The chocolate heiress, who lives off her parents’ fortune, claims she bears a moral obligation to assist those in poverty.
Ryan recently defended her stance by stating: “I have a moral obligation to use my advantages to help those who are struggling.” Critics argue that Ryan’s actions do not align with her rhetoric. There is no evidence she operates food pantries, funds medical care in underserved communities, or establishes schools abroad. Instead, she has focused on campaigning for DSA-aligned politicians such as congressional candidate Brad Lander (D-N.Y.).
Ryan’s position reflects a growing trend among some progressive activists who advocate for “noblesse oblige” without demonstrating tangible charitable efforts. Reminiscent of infamous socialist Karl Marx, many DSA members have been described as “caviar-commie types.”
