Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Warns Foreign Governments Are “Intentionally Ripping This Country Apart” as FARA Enforcement Resumes

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is preparing for an onslaught of attacks after announcing her efforts to restore enforcement by the Justice Department’s Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) office, which has been largely dormant despite being legally active.

In a post on X, Luna stated: “Foreign governments have been intentionally ripping this country apart for their own benefit and it needs to stop. The American people expect their elected leaders to protect them and this effort is apart [sic] of that.” She warned of coordinated attacks and targeted social media disinformation campaigns as she pushes for disclosures of influencers receiving foreign money.

The issue of foreign interference in U.S. politics has become a major topic, particularly following recent actions by pro-Israel lobbies such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). AIPAC openly admitted its role in ousting Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) during his May 19 primary race—a move that Massie previously criticized in a June 2024 interview with Tucker Carlson.

Massie, who is among the few Republicans to have refused AIPAC money, recently introduced legislation aimed at requiring AIPAC to register as a foreign agent under FARA. His bill targets a loophole allowing U.S.-based organizations to lobby for foreign interests without direct financial ties from foreign governments.

According to tracking data, President Donald Trump has received over $230 million from pro-Israel groups since 2020, including more than $215 million from Miriam Adelson’s Preserve America PAC. Luna herself has accepted $27,289 from AIPAC—a figure that has drawn social media criticism.

The list of U.S. lawmakers who have not received AIPAC contributions includes prominent Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). Meanwhile, Florida’s state representatives have accepted significant sums: Republican Randy Fine took $496,299 from AIPAC, while Democrat Lois Frankel received $820,719.

Pro-Israel lobby groups spent approximately $20 million in 2025—less than their 2018 spending but more than in 2024. China remains the largest foreign spender in U.S. lobbying with over $562 million since 2016, followed by Japan ($505 million) and Liberia ($432 million).

FARA, enacted in 1938 to counter Nazi propaganda, requires agents of foreign principals engaged in political activities to register with the Justice Department and disclose their relationships. However, enforcement has been minimal for decades, prompting Luna’s call for action.
